Unlocking the Layers of Powerful Photography, is a series where I dive deep into the art of “reading” photographs and explore how you can use these insights to create images that resonate emotionally and conceptually. Whether you’re looking to improve your technical skills or enhance the emotional depth of your work, understanding the layers within a photograph is key to producing impactful art.
BEYOND THE SURFACE: HOW TO READ A PHOTOGRAPH AND CREATE EMOTIONALLY POWERFUL IMAGES
In this edition, we will begin by analyzing an image from a technical standpoint. Then, we’ll explore how thoughtful composition, the play of light and shadow, and the use of visual elements can convey a story that goes beyond what is immediately visible. Finally, we will focus on the emotional and thematic aspects of the image.
The Bubble Blower

I took this photo in the historic district of Istanbul, known as Suriçi (meaning “the interior of the city walls”). It captures a vibrant street scene in the late afternoon light, where a young boy is silhouetted while blowing bubbles. As a street vendor, this boy is selling a bubble-making toy that brings joy to children. The image creates an enchanting interaction between light, bubbles, and the locals passing by. This photograph invites deeper reflection on contrasts and the fleeting nature of human experience.
This photograph invites deeper reflection on contrasts and the fleeting nature of human experience. At its core, the image contrasts innocence and play with the backdrop of a structured, industrial cityscape. Silhouette as a focal point: The boy blowing bubbles is positioned slightly off-center, to the left, which adheres to the rule of thirds. This placement creates a balanced yet dynamic composition. The bubbles stretch across the right side of the image, guiding the viewer’s eye and enhancing the sense of movement.
Elements of Visual Design or Technical Elements:
1.Composition
Silhouette as a focal point:
The boy blowing bubbles is positioned slightly off-center, to the left, which adheres to the rule of thirds. This placement creates a balanced yet dynamic composition. The bubbles stretch across the right side of the image, guiding the viewer’s eye and enhancing the sense of movement.
Foreground vs. background:
The photograph utilizes layers effectively: the silhouette of the boy in the foreground, the bubbles and passersby in the mid-ground, and the construction in the background. This layering adds depth and immerses the viewer in the scene.

Leading lines and geometric shapes:
The vertical lines from the scaffolding and buildings direct the viewer’s eye upwards, while the street and background figures lead the gaze horizontally. The organic shapes of the bubbles provide a pleasant contrast to the more rigid architectural lines.

2. Lighting
Silhouetting:
The use of backlighting to create a silhouette is particularly effective here. By placing the light source (likely the sun, which has already started to set) behind the subject, the boy blowing bubbles becomes a nearly featureless shape, making the bubbles and their delicate glow visually prominent.
Natural light and golden hour:
The warm tones of the light illuminating the building in the background suggest that the photo was taken during the golden hour, just before sunset. The sun’s low angle creates soft, diffused light that enhances the colors in the bubbles and casts long shadows. This lighting lends the scene a gentle, nostalgic feel.
Reflections and highlights in the bubbles:
The light bouncing off the bubbles creates delicate highlights and rainbow-like reflections. These small bursts of color add to the whimsical feel of the scene and introduce texture to what could otherwise be a dark, silhouetted image. The subtle interaction between the bubbles and the light is a crucial detail that gives the photograph life.

3. Color
Warm and cool tones:
The mix of warm light from the setting sun and the cooler blue hues of the sky creates an appealing contrast in the color palette. This duality enhances the sense of depth and atmosphere, with the cooler tones of the background contrasting against the warmer highlights on the bubbles and reflective surfaces.
Color in the bubbles:
The bubbles act as prisms, catching light and splitting it into a spectrum of colors. Their iridescent quality adds visual interest and imparts a magical, playful tone to the image. The subtle pinks, blues, and purples of the bubbles stand in stark contrast to the otherwise muted and structured background.
4. Depth of Field
Wide depth of field:
The image has a relatively deep depth of field, keeping both the foreground (the silhouette) and the background (the pedestrians and buildings) in focus. This choice is intentional, as it creates a sense of context and ensures that the details in the background remain visible.
Focus on bubbles:
Although the bubbles are small, they appear sharp and crisp against the slightly blurred background. The aperture used here is f/5, which would typically create more background blur, but because I used a 24mm wide-angle lens, the background is only slightly blurred, while the bubbles and the silhouetted boy remain sharp. The delicate sharpness of the bubbles makes them stand out as a key visual element.
5. Exposure
Underexposure for silhouette:
The subject in the foreground (the boy) is intentionally underexposed, transforming him into a silhouette. This choice isolates the action of blowing bubbles and makes the bubbles more prominent, as they catch the light more effectively. The deliberate underexposure adds an element of intrigue to the subject while emphasizing the bubbles’ bright, delicate nature.
Even exposure in the background:
Despite the shadowed foreground, the exposure in the background is well-balanced. The buildings and sky are neither overexposed nor too dark, preserving the details in the cityscape and the figures walking by. This balanced exposure ensures that the viewer can appreciate both the main action in the foreground and the surrounding context.

6. Motion
Implied motion in bubbles:
While the image is still, there is a strong sense of movement due to the bubbles. They appear to float through the frame, suggesting that the scene is unfolding in real-time. This movement contrasts with the more static figures of the passersby, further emphasizing the spontaneity of the moment.
Timing:
The timing of the shot is crucial. The moment I chose captures a sense of impermanence and fragility, much like bubbles being released before they disperse. By timing the shot to coincide with the release of the bubbles and the passing of a mother and possibly her daughter, I aimed to present the viewer with a fleeting yet beautiful moment, freezing the movement in the most harmonious state of these elements.
7. Storytelling
Narrative elements:
Technically, the photo excels in storytelling. The figures in the background are slightly out of focus but still recognizable, adding to the diversity of the scene. The relationship between the bubble-blower and the environment—urban, crowded, yet filled with wonder—adds complexity to the narrative. The scaffolding suggests change or progress, providing a contrast to the timeless, universal act of blowing bubbles.
Human element:
The decision to turn the person blowing bubbles into a silhouette removes their specific identity, transforming them into a universal figure. This allows the viewer to project their own ideas and emotions onto the scene, deepening the engagement with the photo.
8. Perspective and Angle
Low angle:
The photo is taken from a slightly lower angle, giving the bubble-blower more prominence. This angle also enhances the silhouette effect, as the light from the sky and sun frames the figure effectively. It helps the bubbles stand out more, with the sunlight hitting them from behind, adding a sense of wonder and increasing the drama of the bubbles floating upward.
Emotional and Thematic Elements:
Innocence and joy vs. the mundane:
The bubbles, delicate and transparent, represent innocence and impermanence. The act of blowing bubbles is often associated with childhood and carefree moments. In contrast, the surrounding figures—likely on their way to work, running errands, or engaging in religious observance—bring a sense of routine, seriousness, and daily life. This moment reminds us that joy and wonder can exist even in the most ordinary settings.
Light and shadow:
The silhouette of the young person blowing bubbles is striking. This anonymity evokes the idea that such moments of wonder can belong to anyone. The shadows symbolize mystery, the unknown, or perhaps the sense of growing up—standing between the lightness of childhood and the shadows of adulthood.
Transience vs. permanence:
The bubbles, floating and soon to disappear, echo the fleeting nature of moments, much like childhood or small, joyful interactions. In contrast, the scaffolding and urban buildings in the background suggest permanence, growth, and the weight of societal structures. The construction hints at progress or ongoing development, symbolizing the passage of time and change, and further highlighting the ephemeral beauty of the bubbles.
Public and private worlds:
While this is a public scene, there is a private sense of intimacy in the captured moment—the young bubble-blower is immersed in their own world. The onlookers (like the woman with the headscarf) seem only partially engaged with this whimsical act, reflecting how public spaces contain countless individual experiences. The photo prompts us to wonder what each person might be thinking or feeling, adding layers of narrative possibility.
CLOSING THOUGHT:
Bubbles are temporary, and so are we as humans. When the bubbles burst, moments of joy fade, and we grow older. Photographing this fleeting moment is a statement on impermanence. Bubbles are fragile, fun, and beautiful, but also short-lived—here one moment, gone the next. They symbolize the ephemeral nature of joy, youth, and innocence. This childlike purity, a small moment of joy, exists in its own world, disconnected from the grind of adult responsibilities or societal expectations. Our personal joys may be brief, but they are meaningful to us in the moment. How you experience life, of course, depends on you.
Are you the bubble-blower, living in the present and finding joy in small, impermanent things? Or are you the passerby, caught up in the routine, not noticing the fragile beauty floating nearby?
