Summary

The Cradle of Civilization with a Camera.

Our journey begins in Mardin with a focus on ‘Shadows & Geometry’ within the 13th-century Abbaras, followed by a technical Blue Hour session to capture the city’s famous ‘Gece Gerdanlığı’ (Night Necklace) skyline”. We will focus on capturing the universal human element through intimate portraits of artisans and raw scenes of rural Mesopotamian life.

Upper Mesopotamia is a living canvas of textures, shadows, and authentic connections. This journey invites you to capture the soul of the region through candid street photography and intimate portraits of local life, from the 13th-century stone passages of Mardin to the bustling markets of Urfa and the traditional courtyards of Harran

Tradition and Daily Life

On our Mesopotamia photography tour one of our aim is how locals of Mardin and Urfa live today, to get closer to local life and, as much as possible, share daily experiences with the people. That’s why we’ll dive into narrow alleys and shops and street bazaar in Mardin and as well as Urfa.

Sprit of the Stone

This Mesopotamia Photography Tour in Turkey is also about stepping into the textures, history, and everyday life that shape this timeless region. As we walk through ancient streets, we’ll pay attention to the quiet stories embedded in the layers of the old city, noticing how the changing sunlight reveals details of craftsmanship and simple geometric beauty that have been there for centuries.

Göbeklitepe, the “Zero Point of History”
& The beehive houses of Harran:

Göbeklitepe, often called the “Zero Point of History,” offers a powerful setting of ancient symbolism, striking forms, and archaeological mystery, where the T-shaped pillars and carved reliefs invite a more minimal way of seeing. Later in Harran, the warm light reveals the texture and geometry of its iconic mud-brick beehive houses, while the Ulu Cami, ancient ruins, and old castle deepen the sense of timeless Mesopotamian heritage.

Halfeti : The Sunken Village

Halfeti offers a haunting blend of history, silence, and light, where the sunken village and the lone minaret of Savaşan create one of the most unforgettable scenes of the journey. From the boat, we’ll photograph abandoned houses along the shore, the imposing presence of Rumkale, and the minaret glowing in the final light of sunset.

Itinerary

Day by Day - Turkey, Mesopotamia Photo Tour

Day 1 - Arrival to Mardin

What can I expect on the first day of the Mardin photography workshop?

Our journey begins in Mardin with a focus on ‘Shadows & Geometry’ within the 13th-century Abbaras, followed by a technical Blue Hour session to capture the city’s famous ‘Gece Gerdanlığı’ (Night Necklace) skyline”.

How will we photography the human stories of Mardin’s artisans on Day 2?

On Day 2, we delve into the heart of the ancient bazaar to work on portraits, and street photography through Documentary Storytelling.

  • Environmental Portraiture: Mastering high-contrast lighting and geometric forms in ancient stone alleys.
  • Candid Street Photography and Documentary Storytelling: As we walk through the ancient markets, I will share practical, real-time insights on the art of Documentary Storytelling in Turkey. You will learn the nuances of Candid Street Photography—such as how to respectfully engage with local residents and artisans, when to seek permission, and how to capture the “Human Lens” without disrupting the natural flow of a moment
  • Narrative Composition: During our Mardin Photography Workshop 2026, we will master narrative composition by documenting the “awakening” of the old bazaar. By capturing the sights of the streets before the crowds arrive, we will work on creating a visual story of the morning routine.

What visual stories await us in Midyat and the ancient valley of Dara?

On Day 3 of our Mesopotamia Photography Tour in Turkey, we plan to explore the limestone heritage of Midyat and the vast history of Dara. We aim to observe the enduring “Spirit of the Stone” and practice Documentary Storytelling in Turkey as the light shifts across the historical landscape.

  • Midyat & Surrounding Villages: We explore the narrow stone alleys and may discover local crafts such as telkari silver-making or traditional stone carving.
  • Dara’s Ancient Light: As the day progresses, we hope to visit the Roman cisterns and ruins of Dara. Here, we aim to experience how the late afternoon light interacts with the subterranean structures and ancient necropolis, offering a unique highlight for our Mardin Photography Workshop 2026

What can I expect on the first day of the Mardin photography workshop?

On Day 4 of our Mesopotamia Photography Tour in Turkey, we transition from the high-altitude stone architecture of Mardin to the spiritual atmosphere of Şanlıurfa. This journey across the plains provides a perfect canvas for culture in South East Turkey.

The Journey Westward: After checking out of our Mardin hotel, we begin a 4-hour journey across the plains, leaving behind the 13th-century Abbaras for the “City of Prophets”. If conditions allow, we will stop at local villages or seasonal agricultural settlements to document the “universal human element”.

Check-in & Resting : Upon arriving in Urfa we will check-in our hotel in Urfa and take some time to rest.

First Glimpse of Urfa (Balıklıgöl and Rızvaniye Mosque): In the soft glow of the first evening light, we will capture the elegant arches of the Rızvaniye Mosque courtyard, the mystical atmosphere surrounding Balıklıgöl, and reflections upon the water.

What is the ultimate photography itinerary for capturing local life and sunken villages in Southeastern Turkey?

Day 5 focuses on combining high-energy Street Photography in Urfa at the historic Gümrük Hanı and local bazaars around. In the afternoon we will be visiting the sunken village of and doing a boat trip there.

  • Morning Session: “Natural Light Street Portraits” at and around Gümrük Hanı. Candid and natural portraits of local elders wearing traditional “pushi” scarves,  sipping their tea or playing backgammon scenes in the authentic ambiance of the courtyard of Gümrük Hanı.
  • Afternoon Exploration: After having our lunch in the historical medina in a local restaurant  we will be heading to visit Halfeti. We will be taking a boat trip in Halfeti to document this sunken village, the weathered textures of abandoned coastal houses captured from the boat,  the minaret of Savaşan Mosque and the Rumkale fortress during the “Golden Hour.

What photography highlights can I expect while exploring the ancient Göbeklitepe and Harran region of Turkey?

The pinnacle of our Turkey Photography Workshop 2026. We plan to explore the world’s oldest temple at Göbeklitepe to with a sunset session among the iconic beehive houses of Harran village.

  • Göbeklitepe Session: We plan to arrive Göbeklitepe not too late to capture the ancient stones before the midday light becomes too harsh. We will try to focus and work on “Minimalism and Form,” and planning to capture the T-shaped pillars and animal reliefs before the midday crowds arrive.
  • Harran & Beehive Houses : As the late afternoon golden hour light accentuates the unique textures of the iconic mud-brick beehive houses, we will explore the “conical domes” stacked in a “spiral pattern”, — marvels of ancient Mesopotamian engineering— to practice narrative composition and low-light photography within their historic interiors. We will also be photographing the historical Ulu Camii and the ruins of the world’s first university and the ancient castle, concluding our session as the deep orange sunset light hits the adobe structures to create a surreal landscape perfect for ”environmental portraitures”.

How does the Mesopotamia photography journey conclude?

On the final day of the Mesopotamia Photography Tour in Turkey 2026, we’ll come together one last time for breakfast before check-out and transfers to Şanlıurfa Airport (GNY). For those with afternoon flights to Istanbul, we’ll hold a relaxed final image-review session, where each participant can share two or three of their favorite photographs from the tour and exchange thoughts and feedback with the group—a fitting closing moment to reflect on what we’ve created together. If time allows after this discussion, we may return to Urfa’s local bazaars and streets for one last wander, capturing fresh street scenes and intimate portraits before saying farewell.
